Summer 25

The peak of light, longest days, and late nights. Summer is a show of full bloom and bounty. Abundance encompasses our gardens and gatherings alike. It’s a time to be with loved ones, spending time under bright starry nights.

We’re outward, expansive, trying on new things. The heat pulls us to water, anything to cool the dog days. Leisure takes many forms, dynamic travel under clear blue skies, a refreshing dip to cure the stuffy humid air. A nice stroll, a new adventure, nostalgia for the sand. Long grasses surround each trail, concealing the forest floor.

As daylight builds, moisture flees. Each strand drying, waiting for its fate. These grasses are ladders in any wildfire’s path. Cutting them is a symbol of conquest, while representing the inherent generosity of our land. Foraging for these grasses was done in collaboration with local cows, who are brought into the area to control grass height and reduce fire risk.

Long grasses serve as protection, a space for the unseen. Each meadow is a micro-habitat, a generous building block to the land we call home. They symbolize our togetherness and sustenance as one.

This installation, titled Grasslands, ties together a biodiversity of grasses gathered to protect the foothills, illustrating the healing power of coming together and reconnecting with the land. May walking through the grasses reveal a fresh take on your next encounter with nature. Watch a preview of Grasslands here.
